Why Choose Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga Classes

We all want to feel our best, improve our overall wellbeing and have the energy to live at our optimum.  The world of health and fitness has expanded exponentially in recent years and it is hard to know which type of exercise to choose in a congested market.  So why practice yoga? Many of us know, either instinctively or through experience, that yoga makes us feel better.  The visionary B.K.S Iyengar studied and practiced the ancient art of yoga for over 70 years, having suffered a childhood illness that left his body weak and vulnerable to disease. He was able to systematise over 200 postures and breathing techniques and their anatomical background.  He made his body strong and healthy, and then through working with violinist Yehudi Menuhin, was able to bring his system to the West. Iyengar's system highlights that disciplined practice in the physical postures, being totally absorbed and aware as they are being done not only improves strength, stamina, balance and mobility but also improves circulation by better breathing - leading then to a more steady state mentally.

'Unless Freedom is gained in the body; Freedom of the mind is not possible' BKS Iyengar

I'm busy with work, sports, family, why should I make time to attend yoga class? The answer to this depends on your personal aims and objectives.  Personally my yoga practice gives me more time and energy and I feel clearer in thought and more balanced during stressful situations. The link between body and mind is real and well documented.  For some, taking up a regular practice of Iyengar Yoga will be enough to regain control of their physical bodies, correct the postural issues which develop over years of sitting at desks and driving, and reduce the likelihood of injuries and illnesses. For others, incorporating a regular Iyengar Yoga practice into their overall programme of physical fitness and interests will be a way of paying it back into their bodies. Several successful figures have realised the benefits of yoga to their career performance, including Ryan Giggs, Madonna, Sachin Tendulkar and Nigella Lawson. Leading edge athletic performance companies specify yoga in 2 out of 6 sessions per week in their training programmes, recognising the value of postural alignment and muscle management to physical output and recovery. Many elite military units have adopted yoga into their 'human performance optimisation' programmes in order to extend the physical careers of their highly trained personnel. The benefits of structural integrity, soft tissue management and eccentric holds will improve recovery times and increase longevity in sports and pursuits. Iyengar Yoga need not be the only activity you enjoy, but it will enable you to do more of what you enjoy doing for longer.
